Día de Los Muertos is celebrated each year on November 1st. It is a holiday that originated in Mexico but made its way to the U.S. It is a day in which people come together to honor their deceased loved ones by building altars, telling stories, and sharing food. This guide highlights events happening in each NYC borough that showcase these traditions. 

Manhattan Día De Los Muertos Events

Super Sabado
This Día de Los Muertos celebration is full of family-friendly activities like calavera face painting and traditional dance.

  • Date: November 1, 2025 from 12 to 6 p.m.
  • Location: El Museo Del Barrio, 1230 5th Avenue, NY

Día de los Muertos Solidarity Vigil
Organized by Make the Road New York, Solidarity Organizing Initiative and Las Doñas, this vigil honors those who have passed away in ICE and CBP detention.

Mano a Mano’s Day of the Dead Celebration
This free celebration includes an interactive 18-foot long community altar, live musical performances, workshops, and Mexican food available for purchase. People are encouraged to bring copies of pictures of their loved ones to contribute to the altar.

  • Location: St. Mark’s Church, 131 E 10th Street

Brooklyn Día De Los Muertos Events

Family movies at the library
Enjoy back-to-back, family-friendly movie screenings of “Coco” and “The Book of Life” for free.

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum celebrates Dia de los Muertos
Join interactive storytelling, kite making, dance and a community ofrenda where families can pay tribute to their loved ones.

Día de los muertos in Sunset Park
Celebrate those who have passed with a community altar, music, dance performances and more.

Queen Zoo honors the animal kingdom
This Día de los Muertos celebration honors the memory of extinct animals, which includes face painting, animal meet-and-greets and storytime sessions.

Denia Pérez

Denia Pérez is the Latino Community Correspondent at Documented. She is an immigration lawyer by training and longtime activist in the immigrants' rights movement. Denia's experience as a DACAmented person and her parents' experience in removal proceedings profoundly impacted her desire to attend law school and serve her community. In 2018, she became the first DACAmented person admitted to the Connecticut bar and has dedicated her professional life since then to ensuring that policies and resources for the undocumented and Latino community are created with intention and input from those communities. She is excited to apply her policy and legal expertise to this role and deepen her connection to the NYC Latino community.
