New York City’s war on rats isn’t over – thanks in part to delayed trash bins.
A major part of former Mayor Adams’ “Trash Revolution” – an effort to reduce rat sightings and improve cleanliness – was the roll out of official rat-resistant containers, known as “NYC Bins.” Residential property owners with one to nine units are expected to use these bins. Starting this June, failure to comply will result in a fine ranging from $50 to $200.
The new bins have not been without controversy – ongoing battles over parking spaces mean that installing on-street containers could take years.
But there’s another snag. Since its debut in 2024, roughly one million New Yorkers have ordered the NYC bins. However, hundreds of bin orders have been delayed. Read on to learn how to avoid fines before the deadline.
What’s happening with my order?
Online ordering was down for part of the winter, leading to delayed bins. Now the city has promised that the outstanding orders were on track to be completed by March 31.

Should I switch to a new bin?
There’s plenty of time before the deadline. Meanwhile you can continue to use your old trash bin as long as it has a secure lid and is less than 55 gallons.
Is there a way to get the bin faster?
To make the process easier, you can order the bins from DoorDash, Instacart, or Uber Eats, pricing around $50. They are also available in your nearby Home Depot.
You can get your bin reimbursed.
The deadline to apply for reimbursement for your bins is June 1, 2026. This opportunity is available to homeowners of one and two units who received the School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax exemption in 2024 or 2025.
To request your reimbursement, you will need:
- Voucher number from the Department of Finance
- Receipt or any proof of the purchase
- Submit request form online or by mail
